Arcadia Elementary School
5:30 – 7:00 p.m.
Arcadia Elementary will host a "Books & Cooks" Literacy and Math night. Families are invited to spend an evening exploring Literacy and Math through books and recipes. Students, staff and families will be making and sharing fabulous food while learning about using words and numbers in everyday life.
Edison Environmental Science Academy
6:00 – 7:30 p.m.
“Building our Future” - Come join the Edison staff to learn about a variety of literacy games and activities you can do at home with your children to enhance and reinforce the essential skills needed for future success. A variety of student work will be on display to show how literacy across content areas, not just language arts, provides a firm foundation to build upon.
El Sol Elementary School
5:00 – 6:30 p.m.
Theme: Exploring Literacy at the Library
Join us at the Kalamazoo Public Library for an opportunity to explore literacy through movement, song and meaningful activities. Families will visit several stations and participate in literacy workshops throughout the library. We will focus on the importance of reading as a way to achieve lifelong success. Families will also learn more about their public library and the resources that are available. After completing all the stations, each family will receive a free book.
Greenwood Elementary
5:30 – 7:00 p.m.
Theme: You’re Invited to a Book Party!
Each class will celebrate the books of a favorite author. Students have “decorated” the school with their author-related art, writing, and other displays. They also designed and helped to make games and activities about the books and life of their featured author. Students may dress as a favorite character from one of the author’s books. Kalamazoo Public Library visitors will present read-aloud stories in the library and help families apply for library cards. The Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) will provide a bike raffle and bake sale. Every child will leave with the gift of a book to “keep forever.” Parents whose children are under school age are invited to attend — Loving books and literacy can never start too early.
Indian Prairie Elementary School
6:00 – 7:30 p.m.
Come out for "Books and Blankets." Get comfy and cozy in your pajamas and with your favorite stuffed animal, as we feature Indian Prairie authors, a scavenger hunt, bedtime bingo, a visit from our mascot and a special live bedtime story from the Indian Prairie teachers.
King Westwood Elementary School
5:00 – 7:00 p.m.
Families Rock at Reading
• "Look Who Grew up Reading" — Teachers will bring in their baby pictures and list their favorite childhood books. Then students and parents will try to identify the each teacher.
• Each grade level will do an activity around the theme.
• Students who attend every grade level activity will be entered in a drawing for raffle prizes.
• Students will be recording their reading books on black musical notes that will be displayed throughout the building. Gold music notes will represent award-winning books read.
• Classroom doors will be decorated with favorite books and genres.
• Scholastic Book Fair will be on hand.
Lincoln International Studies School
5:30 – 7:00 p.m.
Think College Now — It is never too early to start preparing for college. Recognizing that academic success is a collaborative effort, the activities developed seek to bring everyone together for the benefit of helping students believe in the college dream. All classrooms will have books on display, and visitors will be encouraged to select a book, read it with a student, and then take an Accelerated Reader (AR) test. Take home information on “How to Help Your Child with Reading” will also be provided. All classrooms will showcase a writing project and each grade level/class will develop at least one activity for visitors.
Milwood Elementary School
5:30 – 7:00 p.m.
Theme: A Community of Readers
Each classroom will have literacy-related projects on display in the gymnasium. In addition, each grade level will choose a theme to present, such as “How to do a Read-Aloud”, “Homework Help,” etc. The evening will end with a celebrity reader reading a story to everyone in the auditorium.
Northeastern Elementary School
5:30 – 7:30 p.m.
Theme: Literacy Across the Content Areas
Each child will show a piece of work that illustrates literacy across the content areas. The project shows how literacy is critical to all subject areas. Students can sign up for an Eastside Library card. A non-fiction book will be given to Pre-K – 5th graders. Also distributed will be writing pads, pencils, and pencil sharpeners. Magazines will be available for parents.
Northglade Montessori Magnet School
5:00 – 7:00 p.m.
Theme: Families That Read Together Succeed Together
Families will learn ways that they can help their children succeed in school. Northglade will be using the Fountas and Pinnell “Ten Ways to Help” from the book Help America Read. We will provide hands-on activities that parents can implement at home. Children will be recognized for completing the Six Flags Read to Succeed Challenge. Families will be acknowledged for reading and completing the Families That Read Together Succeed Together school-wide initiative.
Parkwood-Upjohn Elementary School
5:30 – 7:00 p.m.
Join the teachers for a series of exciting mini-workshops, centered on reading together at home. Each grade will have a place for families to play great games together and an opportunity to learn some strategies for making reading together at home more fun and gather some workshop stickers. Some great prizes will be raffled.
Prairie Ridge Elementary School
5:00 – 7:00 p.m.
Theme: READING: Learning’s Most Valuable Vehicle
Grade levels will share activities for different reading strategies including monitoring comprehension, activating and connecting prior knowledge, asking questions, inferring meaning, determining importance and summarizing and synthesizing. Student works will be on display.
Other activities will include guest authors who will read to the children, a display from the Oshtemo Library, free books to all children, a book fair and two bikes will be raffled.
Spring Valley Center for Exploration
5:30 - 7:30 p.m.
Theme: Munsch on a Good Book.
Come help us celebrate author Robert Munsch. Activities will include a book exchange and a game raffle. Come listen to some great munschable tales, and participate in a wide range of reading activities. A goody bag with all kinds of games and activities that promote reading is yours for the munsching.
Washington Writers' Academy
5:00 – 7:00 p.m.
Theme: Readers Write and Writers Read!
Our literacy night is combined with a celebration of writing which will showcase the harmonious connection between reading and writing. Families will have the opportunity to view displays of K-5 student writing samples, as well as participate in engaging activities. These activities will focus on strategies and skills that can be added to their current tool bags to support young writers and readers at home.
Winchell Elementary
5:30 – 7:00 p.m.
Theme: Follow Your Dreams
Join us for literacy activities that include:
• An opportunity to view classroom materials and ask questions
• Building dream catchers
• Student projects on display
• Literacy games featuring fiction and non-fiction texts
• A professional storyteller
Woods Lake Elementary: A Magnet Center for the Arts
6:00 – 7:30 p.m.
Theme: World of Reading
Everyone will enjoy a night of visiting foreign lands and reading about different cultures. The children will arrive at the airport and receive their luggage (goodie bag) and a passport. Activities in each classroom will excite and encourage students to learn about different cultures through reading and writing activities. The evening will conclude with a concert by the Kids In Tune choir and a dance performance by the Woods Lake Dance Company. Students may turn in their passport as they leave and receive a free book.
Woodward School for Technology and Research
5:30 – 7:00 p.m.
Grade levels will create stations based on specific authors or genres for the purpose of teaching and promoting strategies for reading. Giveaways, prize drawings, and make-it /take it opportunities will be available throughout the fun-filled night of reading.

Students will perform their original works of self-expression and creativity at the Second Annual Poetry Slam. Student works will be on display, as well as original artwork and a student hand-painted mural, in the gallery walk. We will celebrate the finale of our All-School-Read, "The Westing Game" by Ellen Raskin. The night will be filled with mystery and imagination.
Hillside

Staff will challenge the students to a Read-n-Hoop basketball game. Students will submit a project based on the All-School Read book "This Is What I Did" by Ann Ellis. The projects are poems, essays, artwork, scripts, etc. to be displayed in the hall by the gymnasium.

The building will be transformed into the carnival setting of our All-School-Read, "Uglies" by Scott Westerfeld. It is an exciting night filled with fun, food, learning, science and technology. We will ride hover boards, play tricks/games run with bungee jackets, escape "special circumstances" agents, make lip gloss, party in "New Pretty Town" and visit the petting zoo.
